Getting There
AIRPORT The Estonian national carrier, Estonian Air, offers flights to a variety of European destinations. The Riga-based Air Baltic operates direct flights from Tallinn to Riga, and there's also Easy Jet, which features affordable flight connecting Tallinn with London and Berlin. There are other airlines connecting Tallinn to a variety of European cities.
An immaculate, modern and convenient facility, Tallinn Airport is a great place to fly to and from. Since it isn't very large, you won't need that much time to get to your gate after check-in, usually it's enough if you get there an hour before departure time. Getting to and from the airport is easy by taxi. You should take a company taxi, not a privately operated one. You can tell the difference because the company taxis all wait in a row. 45 to 60 krooni, which is around 3 to 4 Euros, is about the most a ride should cost. There are also buses available, running every 20-30 minutes between the airport and the city centre. The port is bus number 2. It takes about 10 minutes.
BUS Tallinn's central bus station is located in the city center, about 2 km south-east from the Old Town, and serves all international buses as well as long-distance destinations within Estonia. It's a good idea to purchase your ticket ahead of time for international routes, and there are quite frequent buses to popular places such as Tartu or Pärnu. An ATM Machine as well as an office for exchanging currency is available. Buses 17, 17A, 23 and 23A serve the Old Town, or you can take a taxi: there's a stand outside the bus station, and a trip to the Old Town ought to cost about 40-50 EEK. Should you be arriving from Riga or Vilnius on the Eurolines bus, you might want to get off when the bus stops near the Viru Hotel, which is directly beside the Old Town.
HELICOPTER Copterline has a service flying a helicopter between Tallinn and Helsinki. There are about 14 flights a day, but no flights on the weekends. The flight itself only lasts 18 minutes. Prices run from 179 EU to as low as 79 EU one-way. The Tallinn terminal is located near Linnahall in the harbour area, which is quite close to the Old Town. The Helsinki terminal is situated on the southern tip of Hernesaari, and it's farther from the city centre, though only about 2-3 kilometers away. If that's too far for you, you can call for a taxi at Tallinn's Copterline check-in desk, and one will be there waiting when you land in Helsinki.
Getting Around
ON FOOT The Old Town and Toompea are ideal for exploring on foot, which is good because there isn't any public transport in these areas. You'll need proper walking shoes for the cobblestone streets and many stairs that run up and down Toompea, especially during the winter, when the cobblestones get icy and somewhat dangerous.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT For visiting places a bit further away, you'll be best served by the city's buses, trams and trolleybuses, which are cheap and run fairly frequently. If you purchase a ticket beforehand from a kiosk, you'll save a considerable amount when compared to what you pay when buying a ticket from the driver. A single ticket from a kiosk costs 10 kroon, and 15 kroon from the driver. For 70 kroon, you can buy a book of ten tickets and save even more. A ticket is valid for one ride, and they have to be validated in a machine found on each tram or bus.
