The origins of Gdansk date back to the 7-th century. The millenium of the city was officialy celebrated in 1997. However, most of the historians date the founding of the city to around AD 980. The city has had a very big impact on Polish history. In fact, almost all historical conflicts started in Gdansk or because of it. It is also the place where the beginning of defeating of the communistic system started. Situated in a perfect strategic location, Gdansk kept changing its owners across centuries, survived many occupations and finally became Polish again in 1945. Destroyed almost in 80% during WWII the city started to rebuild, and it is now following the path to be one of the most beautiful and colorful cities in Poland. Its middle-age architecture is said to be one of the most valuable in the whole country. Unique buildings, the closeness of the Baltic Sea and charming natural surroundings will make your stay in Gdansk truly unforgettable.
Gdansk is the cradle for many famous people, such as Arthur Shopenhauer, Lech Walesa, Gunther Grass to name just a few, and its cultural and artistic impact is still noticeable around the world. Numerous festivals and concerts organized in Gdansk, and all cultural events such as St. Dominic fair or street theater performances are attracting many people from all around the world.
Closeness of the Baltic Sea allows summer visitors to enjoy sun and sandy beaches. It also attracts those who want to spend their summer time in an active way. Being part of the Baltic triangle of cities, Gdansk gives perfect location for people who wish to spend great summer time in the vicinity of typical summer attractions. Easy access to Sopot – a perfect party place, and Gdynia, yet another cultural Baltic center, makes Gdansk a great place for starting all summer journeys!
