You might have not known it, but Moscow is the biggest European city! According to official statistics, the number of its inhabitants has recently exceeded 10 millions, however, with all the unofficial data, we may estimate that as many as 15 millions people live in the capital of Russia. The city houses all the important administration of the Russian Federation – Moscow Kremlin is the home of the President of Russia and of many facilities for the national government.
Moscow is also the economic center of the country. As all the major Russian and international enterprises are located there, the dynamics of its development is really impressive. According to “Forbes” the number of billionaires living in this city is almost the highest in the world!!! New York is the only metropolis to precede Moscow.
Moscow is located on the banks of the Moskva River – there is a total of 49 magnificent bridges across the river and its canals within city limits . The heart of the city is the Moscow Kremlin – the most widely known symbol of the Russian capital. As far as city’s architecture is concerned, for a very long time the skyline of the city was dominated by various Orthodox churches. However, this look of Moscow changed during Soviet times. Joseph Stalin, was making much “effort” to modernize the city – he ordered the construction of new roadways (some of which were even ten lanes wide!), but in the same time destroyed a great number of historically significant architectural sites. Numerous works of religious architecture, such as for example the Kazan Cathedral or the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, were completely destroyed during Stalin’s rule. Hopefully during the 1990s, both the latter were reconstructed.
