Rio de Janeiro was discovered exactly on 1st January 1502 by the Portuguese who confused the entrance to Guanabana Bay with the mouth of a river.
This is a city of impressive natural beauty, with building areas by the bay with amazing views to the beach as well as to the “morro”, Brazil’s wonderful green hills.
Because of the great landscape Rio is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the entire world, hence the name that carries “Cidade Maravilhosa” (wonderful city).
Cultural life in Rio is very rich and intense. Most popular worldwide are without a doubt the 3 intense carnival days. The carnival tradition dates back to early 18th century, imported from Europe and the citizens had to riot the carnival until it was allowed, the parade itself as it is today has been taking place since 1930.
During this time, every tourist or resident is involved in the craziness and seduced by the music, the singing, the parties, the dancing and mostly admiring the outlandish display of the different Samba Schools showing what they have been practicing and preparing during the whole year.
Another big attraction of the city is the beaches, 45 miles of sand including Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon. The beach has a huge importance in the social life of people from Brazil, and nowhere else you’ll find beaches so big and impressing as in Rio. It’s not just for bathing or tanning, it’s a chance to meet other people, practice sports like football or volleyball or surfing of course. Even during winter, “cariocas” enjoy their time here.
