OLD TOWN APARTMENTS
Saint Petersburg is among the most beautiful cities in the world. From the days in 1703 when Peter the Great founded the city on the banks of the Neva River to the 1991 events that changed its face, this relatively young city (by the European standards) has a very interesting history.
Although the first construction was the Peter and Paul fortress, located in a small island in the Neva delta, the first residence built for the Tsar was a small wooden cabin, called the Cabin of Peter the Great, he later ordered to build two palaces, the Summer Palace and the Winter Palace. Since there were no bridges, the people used to cross the river by boat, that gave Saint Petersburg the name of the „Venice of the North”
The original city center was between the fortress and the Cabin of Peter the great, later named the Trinity Square. The main building of this place was the Trinity Church, the first one built in the city, surrounded by the nobility houses and the market.
Unfortunately only few buildings form that time still exist, many of them have been demolished or remodeled. To have an approximated idea how the city looked like, you need to visit the „Twelve Colleges” building in saint Petersburg State University and the Kikin House in the Vasilievski Island.
The city has borne different names, when in 1914 the WWI began, the Germanic St. Petersburg turned into its more Russian equivalent, Petrograd. In 1924, after Vladimir Lenin's death, the city changed its name to become Leningrad, it marked the transition to a Socialist city. In 1991, a referendum took place in the city and Leningrad recovered its original name, Saint Petersburg.
This is the Russian city that has more green areas, more than 200 parks and 1000 tree-lined streets. You can choose from the most central park in town, Alexander Garden, to the oldest, Summer Garden (1704). Also you can visit the Botanical garden which has more than 12000 different species, including the Queen of the Night which only blooms one night a year. Spend your free time in the Kirov Central Culture and Leisure Park or visit the St. Petersburg's Eternal Flame located in the Field of Mars. The Leningrad Zoo is the only Russian zoo, as well as one of the oldest in the world.
Here you hunger of culture will be satified, Saint Petersburg offers you not only the world-known Hermitage but also more than 50 other museums worth visiting like the Academy of Fine Arts, the Applied Art Museum, the Dostoyevski Memorial Museum, The Marble Palace, The Mikhailovsky Castle and The Stroganov Palace just to name few of them. Also you can visit the Mariinski Opera and Ballet Theater and the Imperial Palace and park ensemble in Peterhof.
From the second half of May to the beggining of July enjoy the amzing White Nights, due to the northerly location of the city, the sun does not go down enough below the horizon, so the nights are almost indistinguishable from day. The best period to experience this amazing phenomenon is usually from the middle to the end of June.
No matter what are you looking for, the splendor this city has will make your visit here a memorable one.
